Exercise of the Day |
A consistently performed aerobic and resistive exercise program has been shown to be significantly beneficial for many physiological functions of the body.
Not only does regularly performed exercise enhance overall health and fitness levels, but exercise has also been shown to reduce the risk of cancer and cancer recurrence, as well as reduce the risk of other diseases linked to inactivty and obesity such as cardiovascular disease. Exercise also lowers an individual's morbidity and mortality risk.
A consistently performed aerobic and resistive exercise program will:
- Improve cardiovascular fitness and efficiency
- Reduce resting heart rate
- Increase resting metabolic rate
- Reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure
- Improve pulmonary function and the ability to process oxygen
- Improve lung capacity and resiliency
- Improve stamina and endurance for prolonged activity
- Reduce or eliminate shortness of breath with activity
- Improve muscle strength and endurance
- Improve muscle mass by developing more lean muscle
- Increase muscle fiber size and density
- Increase bone mineral density and restore bone strength
- Reduce body fat percent and Body Mass Index (BMI)
- Reduce overall body weight
- Improve cholesterol ratios in the blood
- Enhance ability to regulate insulin and body temperature
Besides these physiological adaptations noted to occur with regularly performed exercise, exercise has been shown to also reduce depression and improve overall psychological well-being, enhance physical fucntion for performing activities of daily living (ADL's), as well as reduce the risk for falls and fractures. To improve your personal health and fitness, exercise must become a part of your daily routine.
