Precision AssessmentLymphedema is traditionally assessed by determining the girth and volume of a particular limb and comparing it to the other uninvolved limb. There are different ways in which limb girth and volume are measured. Common methods of assessing limb girth and volume include circumferential tape measurements as well as using a volumeter, measuring total water displacement of the limb, for assessment. Both of these assessment methods can be lengthy and imprecise, as there is significant potential for error in the measurement process.

At New Horizons Physical Therapy, we utilize the most technologically advanced and precise method of assessing the presence of Lymphedema. We utilize a computerized, infrared girth and volume assessment tool called a Perometer®, which provides an exact girth and volume assessment and identifies the presence of any edema in the assessed limb.

The Perometer® utilizes computerized, infrared optoelectronic volumetry analysis to identify limb volume and diagnose Lymphedema. This method of assessment has been found to have greater reliability than other methods of volume assessment. This technology is also unique to New Horizons Physical Therapy, as there are no other Lymphedema treatment facilities within San Diego County that utilize the same assessment technology.

The benefit of this advanced technology is that we can identify the presence of Lymphedema at the earliest stages, even with minimal changes in limb volume. Because the Perometer® identifies even the most subtle increases in limb volume, we can initiate the most appropriate Lymphedema treatment interventions in a timely manner, thereby reducing negative effects of prolonged edema in the affected limb. Upon the completion of formal Lymphedema treatment, the Perometer® also allows for precise measurement of limb girth and volume to create a custom-fitted compression garment that is required to maintain the reduction in limb size and volume.

In addition to performing Perometer® assessments, we utilize digital photography of bilateral limbs to establish a baseline of your condition. These photographs are used for comparison to identify visual changes in your condition with active treatment intervention. As a courtesy, we provide both you and your physician with a copy of these assessments.

We are proud to be the only Lymphedema treatment facility in San Diego to offer this unique assessment process allowing us to identify the earliest stages of Lymphedema.
