Lymphedema is a swelling that can occur as a side effect from cancer related treatment. If surgery or radiation therapy is performed on the axillary lymph nodes (lymph nodes in the armpit area), there is a risk for arm, trunk, or breast swelling. If surgery or radiation therapy is performed to the inguinal nodes (lymph nodes in the groin area), there is a risk for leg or genital swelling. Following such procedures, you will always be at risk for lymphedema. Lymphedema can occur right after surgery or even thirty years later. The key to successful management of lymphedema is to begin treatment as early as possible once swelling is detected. Although it is optimal to begin treatment at an early onset, significant gains can be achieved at any stage of swelling.

Why is it important to treat lymphedema?
If you have signs of lymphedema, it is important to undergo treatment for several reasons:

Lymphedema creates an increased risk for developing cellulitis, which is a quick spreading infection. Formal treatment can decrease the amount of stagnate lymph fluid in the limb which decreases your risk for cellulitis.

Medical evidence proves that if lymphedema is not treated, it will progressively worsen over time.

Treatment also improves the cosmetic appearance of the lymphedema limb by reducing volume 60-80% of the pre-treatment level.

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)
Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is considered the gold standard for the treatment of lymphedema at this time. It is a two-phase program consisting of a treatment phase and a maintenance phase. The treatment phase is performed daily for two to four weeks. The maintenance phase consists of daily self-care and planned reassessments with a certified lymphedema therapist.
