Pre-Surgical Assessment
Prior to surgical intervention, baseline information regarding pre-surgical
function and range of motion are collected. Precision volume and limb girth
measurements are completed using a Perometer, which is a computerized analysis
device utilizing infrared technology. Detailed instruction of lymphedema
precautions, and specific post-surgical exercises are provided to enhance
early recovery after surgery.
Post-Surgical Assessment/Reassessment
After surgical intervention, baseline information regarding post-surgical
function and range of motion are assessed and compared to pre-surgical
measurements. Precision volume and limb girth measurements are completed
using a Perometer, which is a computerized analysis device utilizing infrared
technology. Lymphedema precautions are reviewed and progression of the
post-surgical exercises is provided.
Periodic re-evaluation of range of motion and limb girth and volume is required
to identify improvement. Progression of individualized post-surgical exercises
occurs to allow for advancement of recovery and independence. Reassessments
are provided until pre-surgical measurements are restored and patient independence
is achieved.
Lymphedema Assessment/Reassessment
A complete medical and cancer history is required to perform a thorough lymphedema
assessment. Baseline digital photos of the affected limb are taken. Precision
volume and limb girth measurements are performed using a Perometer, which
is a computerized analysis device utilizing infrared technology. Patient
education in lymphedema treatment options and instruction in arm or leg
care guidelines are provided.
Reassessment includes current digital photos of the affected limb and precision
volume and limb girth measurements using a Perometer. Graphical reports are created
to reflect changes over time. Lymphedema reassessment is recommended every six months
in order to identify early changes in limb size and to promptly begin appropriate
clinical intervention.

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)
MLD is a manual technique, similar to massage, that is used to facilitate lymph
vessels and transport stagnate lymph fluid from an edematous area to other
regions of the body that can accept and continue with the normal processing
and elimination of lymph fluid.
Self-Manual Lymph Drainage (Self-MLD)
Patients are provided with detailed demonstration and written instruction
of how to successfully perform self-MLD techniques to facilitate the flow
of lymph fluid.
Compression Bandaging
A multi-layer bandage is applied over the entire limb providing gradient pressure
to assist with edema reduction. In addition to the bandaging, customized padding
inserts that assist with localized edema reduction are
utilized as necessary.
Self-Compression Bandaging
Patients are provided with detailed demonstration and written instruction
of how to successfully perform self-compression bandaging.
Compression Garments
Therapeutic compression garments are used to maintain limb volume reduction
once treatment has been successfully completed. Standard sizing and custom
garments are available for both upper and lower extremities. Precision measurements
are obtained using the Juzo Perometer® in order
to provide a custom fit for all compression garments.
